Sammy Or

As one of the pioneering font designers who have modernised Chinese characters, Sammy Or is a true maestro that has laid the foundation of contemporary Chinese font design. With 30 years of experience working with corporations like MTR, Apple and font design company Monotype, Or’s imprint is all over our city life. No matter it’s Hong Kong’s distinctive train station signage or the Lihei and LiSong fonts that we use on Mac, all of the eye-pleasing fonts designed by Or strike a wonderful balance between utility and artistic pursuit.

A picture is worth a thousand words – celebrating the art of Chinese font design with an interactive twist

This installation is a tribute to Or’s masterful creation in Chinese font design. With curator’s concept, and programmed by local interactive designer, the installation generates different weather and nature conditions composed of XinGothic Chinese characters. Through dynamic arrangement of characters with varying font weights, a series of natural phenomena are visualized in a maze of text. The work captures the power of nature in some ink-painting-like imagery using Chinese characters as a subdued iconography. The work is a witty “word play” representing a modernised Chinese culture in the digital age.
